The Power of 'Inclusive Pricing'/'Name Your Price' at Community Sports Events
The purpose of ALTERNATIVE BASEBALL's Playing for Community Integration at Rickwood Field (and our other events) is to unite the community together against the subtle stigmas of disabilities. Instead, the event is designed to encourage spectators, volunteers, supporters, and athletes to continue supporting each other in promoting the greater need for societal integration of people with disabilities in life off the field. Community engagement is a huge tenet of this National event. We strive to be as inclusive and authentic as possible in encouraging a higher turnout of those throughout and outside the disability community. We also believe that experiencing baseball from the stands, the field, or anywhere else is part of living the American Dream.
The flat ticket fee doesn't work for us because there are some (especially those in this community) who want the opportunity to see any ball at all and otherwise couldn't afford to go to most stadiums. Many are encouraged to generously donate to ABO at the event and they often do. Financially, that largely makes up the difference for guests with financial hardships (THANK YOU!!!). Here, the flexibility behind 'price' is an added freedom for guests to give what they can/what is deemed acceptable/whatever their hearts desire. Funds raised go to help Alternative Baseball develop more leadership, life, and baseball opportunities for our athletes with disabilities across America. For us, this degree of inclusivity and accessibility oftentimes opens up chances to build stronger relationships over time that are built on respect, personalization, and authenticity.
It's part of the core realization that many have never seen a game like ours played before; a 9-inning game that will star athletes with disabilities from across America, local community leaders, regional 'celebrities', and former professional baseball players. It's important to take strides to create a great experience and positive first impression that will, in turn, inspire those in attendance and others. This is just one small part of it. We want to inspire more people to take action in their communities for those with disabilities; especially with Alternative Baseball and our programs across the country. Everyone who attends one of our events is taking time out of their day to support the cause; noble and commendable itself! To me, the adaptability and the reference to attendees as 'honored guests' adds a sense of prestige and pride. We needed to reflect and acknowledge that. For us, that includes making the game accessible for all honored guests to attend and enjoy the experience of inclusive sports at America's Oldest Baseball Stadium to the fullest. There's room to strive for exceptionalism in everything.
